There are a lot of businesses that are staying away from social media, using the excuse that it’s not the right fit.
That can be true, and we’ll often tell clients that they’re not ready for the space yet.
Yet there are also a lot that are saying it’s “opposite to our plans”. Meaning that they’re going to continue with their traditional marketing, PR, advertising or whatever. The one-way dialogue where they can exert the most control. Even though there are plenty of neon signs flashing that the message and medium has changed.
But you know what? Opposites attract. Opposites often have a way of offering beautiful results from the very fact that they are so different.
Watch this video and see what can happen when opposites come together to make something magical that crosses boundaries and culture.
Then ask yourself if the fact that social media is so “opposite” to you is exactly why you should be looking at it.
I love that song and lovely, lovely Luciano! I agree – magic can happen – just need to be open to it.
In terms of readiness for social media – I think companies should simply look to their customers and see what they are doing. Are they online? If so – companies need to be where their customers are – and engage with them on those platforms. Social media might not yet replace more traditional communication channels but should be considered in the mix. When in doubt – just look to your customers.
Thanks for the post – and the great video.

Great point, Anne.
The best thing about that approach is you don’t even have to be hugely active in the space – just make sure you know what your customers are saying, and get in touch with them to make sure >i>they know you’re listening to what they’re saying too.
